Yellow Roses

Mad about yellow roses? You've come to the right place! At Mr. Roses, we offer a wide variety of fresh yellow roses and rose petals for your delectation, from the palest yellow-white to the deepest gold. Yellow roses traditionally represent joy, friendship, and delight, and are used to welcome a person back after they've been gone. They also figure in song, most famously in the song "Yellow Rose of Texas." But yellow roses, despite being a long-time favorite among rose fanciers, have occasionally gotten a bad rap. In the old days, they symbolized jealousy, and an open yellow rose was a message that asked, "Don't you love me any more?" Then too, some say that yellow is the color of insanity -- and it's still held that yellow roses in a wedding are a prelude to disaster. We say, "Codswallop!" If you like the color of a rose and it makes you happy, use it for whatever you like. It's silly to let old traditions get in your way: make some new traditions for you and yours, and give yellow roses a try! They're perfect for congratulations, especially to new parents, and will stand you in good stead on those occasions when you need to express a heartfelt "I'm sorry."

Whither yellow roses?

Like most of the fecund rose tribe we know and love today, yellow roses originated in the Middle or Far East. They are mentioned in a tale about the Islamic prophet Mohammed in the sixth century (in which, sadly, red roses became yellow due to a wife's adultery), but they didn't appear in the West until the early 19th century. Curiously, yellow roses arrived along with their red counterparts, and were used extensively by breeders to produce the extravagant hybrid tea roses we adore today. The first hybrid yellow tea roses were pale and not particularly robust, and their color tended to fade away after a few days, so a strong yellow rose was sought. Later imports from China in the late 19th century added to the diversity of the Rose genome in the West; and finally, a hybrid yellow tea rose was produced shortly after 1900. It was descended largely from the bright yellow Rosa foetida, which as its name might suggest had a rather disagreeable odor. Ironically, one of the great triumphs of modern rose breeding was producing yellow roses that smelled good!
