Get Well Roses

Sickness is a part of life, but it's easier to bear when there's someone at your side offering you best wishes for your recover. Traditionally, get well wishes take the form of written cards, candy, greenery, and, of course, flowers. We may be a little biased here, but we happen to think that an elegant bouquet of flowers is the best get well wish there is -- and if you're going to spring for flowers, you should go for the classiest kind. In other words, get your sick friend some roses.

Get Well roses provide the best of two worlds: not only are they lovely to gaze upon, they smell delicious. Particularly fragrant are the tea roses, which got the name because their scent reminded the 19th century Victorians of tea. (We happen to think that the best tea smells like roses, but that's neither here nor there).

The type of Get Well roses you'd send to someone would depend on your relationship with them. Green roses, which symbolize growth (and thus health) are usually appropriate. Other colors with wide appeal, especially for acquaintances, are the warm hues: orange, pink, yellow, and (to a lesser extent), light pink. It doesn't take a rocket scientist, or a rose expert, to realize that when you send these colors, you're sending your warm wishes for their recovery. Yellow roses are especially appropriate for a Get Well bouquet, since they symbolize caring and friendship in today's rose roster (though don't tell that to the Victorians -- back then, yellow roses were for jealousy).  Finally, there's dark pink, the perfect color to express your appreciation or gratitude for someone: a mentor, a mother, a grandmother, or anyone else, man or woman, to whom you feel you own a debt of gratitude.

What do we recommend? We're fond of them all, so why don't you create a bouquet with roses of multiple colors? At Mr. Roses, we can handle up to twelve colors in a single order.

Of course, some rose colors don't lend themselves to the "get well" sentiment. For example, white roses are beautiful, but some say they're too mindful of the sterility of the hospital room (assuming that's where your recipient is), and even of the whiteness of bandages. (Hey, we didn’t make this rose symbolism up -- blame it on those wacky Victorians who thought roses smelled like tea). While red roses of various shades work well in some situations, almost everyone is aware that red is reserved mostly for lovers -- and the other colors can be a welcome change from red, anyway. If the Get Well roses are for a spouse or lover, then by all means stick to red to symbolize your passion; though, again, some might find negative connotations here, since red is as natural a color for blood as it is for roses. No worries, though: you can add a few purple or lilac roses to the mix to soften the red a bit, tilting it more toward the passion end of the scale.
