Easter Roses

While the story of Easter has gotten somewhat muddled by our recent emphasis on egg-laying, candy-giving rabbits, at its basis the holiday remains a celebration of one of the most miraculous elements of Christian mythology: the resurrection of Jesus Christ, three days after His death. Easter, therefore, is a celebration of life, of springtime rebirth -- and what better way to celebrate it than with flowers? While in the past Easter lilies have gotten most of the press, the King of Flowers -- the rose -- is also equal to the task of providing color and elegance to Easter Sunday.

White roses are especially apropos for the day representing Christ's rebirth, since like the Lamb himself, they represent all that is pure and good with the world. Red roses might represent his passion, as well as the blood spilled during his crucifixion. But you should consider green roses, too. After all, they represent new growth, life, and fecundity -- and what could be more appropriate for a spring holiday, when the world is coming back to life after its long winter's nap? Not only that, green roses are exotic, compared to what most of us normally see, and they'll add a nice touch to any Easter roses gift or display.

One place where Easter roses will be especially welcome is in an Easter parade. Even a few blossoms, in any of the traditional colors, can add charm and style to the average Easter outfit. The less common purple roses are also recommended for this task; they might invite a few pleased comments, and they're as lovely as any rose can be. Some of the more exotic multicolored and psychedelically dyed roses aren't recommended for Easter, however. The holiday celebrates the Resurrection, after all, not the Age of Aquarius!

Even if you choose not to purchase bouquets or boutonnières for your family, roses of any color can make excellent decorations, not just for your home but for your church as well. Some Christian denominations perform moving ceremonies on Easter, ceremonies in which flowers as lovely as roses can surely play an important role. And let's not forget that in many traditions, Easter is a feast day: and what feast is complete without flowers? Whether at Church or at home, Easter rose bouquets and place settings will make the meal that much more elegant.

Don’t think that your Easter roses are finished giving just because Easter is over. When you're done celebrating and visiting for the day, put your flowers in a vase of water and they'll stay beautiful for days to come. Even better, when they start to droop, remove and air-dry the petals to make the basis of a lovely potpourri. While the scent has been bred out of some hybrid tea roses, most live up to their reputation for a sweet, penetrating scent.

Easter roses can be had in a variety of colors, quantities, and arrangements, often for much less than you'd expect. Contact us here at Mr. Roses, and let's talk.
