Birthday RosesIt's hard to think of any kind of celebration that can't be brightened with roses. Take your birthday, for instance. While your average manly steelworker might not appreciate you sending a big bouquet of birthday roses into his workplace, just about anyone else would be delighted to receive one, whether at work or at home. Birthday roses are especially appropriate for those flowers of the human race: our mothers, grandmothers, aunts, wives, girlfriends, sisters and daughters, without whom society would surely fall apart. The type of birthday roses you choose for that special someone should reflect their role in your life. Young girls, especially daughters and sisters, seem made for the shy white rose, which indicates purity and innocence; they're also appropriate if you're a teen expressing interest in your first crush. Similarly, gifts of rosebuds in general, no matter what the color, denote innocent love and tell the recipient, "you're young and beautiful." This will surely be a hit with the older women in your life! Roses in bloom express gratitude, which makes them great birthday roses for your Mom. If you can get them in a deep pink, which is the color of gratitude and appreciation, then all for the better. Here's one big advantage of birthday roses, at least from the giver's perspective: you don't have to worry about figuring out what to give the woman who has everything, or about making mistakes with her ring or clothing sizes (guys, never, ever buy a woman clothing unless she's there to try it on. Ignoring this advice can be deadly). A bouquet of roses is always appropriate. Even if she suspects it's a fallback gift, she's going to appreciate the thought and the beauty. If the roses are going to someone you love romantically, you can add to the allure by doing something a little less obvious than getting her a round dozen blooms. Six roses indicates infatuation; nine, that you'll be together forever; ten, that your love is perfect; and thirteen, that you'll be friends forever. Of course, you may have to include a card telling them what you mean, assuming your loved one isn't up on the latest rose symbolism. Speaking of romantic birthday roses, you can't go wrong with red. Yellow's great for warmth and orange expresses desire and enthusiasm for someone, but go with red for love and respect. Even someone who doesn't know anything about rose symbolism will understand completely when you send red roses. A rich, deep red is particularly effective. If, on the other hand, you're most interested in subtle messages, you can send birthday roses in more exotic colors. Take green, for instance: green roses symbolize fertility and fecundity, which may be a hint to your wife that you're ready to start a family. Purple roses, on the other hand, offer up a suggestion of mystique, enchantment, love at first sight, and even a bit of caution. Blue roses -- either dyed ones, or the genetically engineered ones that will soon be on the market -- have basically inherited the meanings of their purple predecessors, with an added side-note of the first flush of new love.
