Anniversary RosesA year is a long time, which makes any anniversary special -- whether you're celebrating your first job, the memory of an important event, somebody's birth, or a lifetime spent together in wedlock. The latter is what we typically think of when we hear the term "anniversary," but the other examples are valid, too. Many anniversaries are secular, though some are religious, whether we generally think of them as such or not. After all, what is Christmas but the celebration of the anniversary of Christ's birth -- and what is Easter but the anniversary of His death and subsequent resurrection? So where do anniversary roses come into the picture? Why, roses might almost have been created for anniversaries. They're elegant, poignant, and beautiful, and they come in a wide range of colors. They've even got thorns, to remind us that even the loveliest things can have their painful elements -- a sentiment that's especially appropriate for anniversaries. After all, with anniversaries you're marking time; and as the saying goes, into all lives some rain must fall. That rain -- those thorns of life -- just make it all the more important to emphasize the good over the bad. Most of us celebrate our anniversaries (wedding or otherwise) privately, but there are notable exceptions to the rule. Birthday parties are an obvious example of anniversaries, and some of us make a pretty big deal of them every year -- right up until we hit the point where we no longer want anyone to know how old we are. When it comes to wedding anniversaries, the tenth, twenty-fifth, fiftieth, and beyond hold special significance, and tend to be widely celebrated. And what do you need for such celebrations? Among other things, you need flowers -- and what better flowers than roses, and in copious quantities, too? The color doesn't matter as much as the sentiment, though excellent rose colors for wedding anniversary decorations include red, pink, and green. The red, of course, symbolizes the passion the two honorees feel for one another, while pink is appreciation and gratitude -- an especially appropriate choice if the children of a union are providing the flowers. Green is more appropriate for younger couples, as it suggests fertility and fecundity; however, it can be a subtle way for older couples to indicate that their love is still green. More commonly, anniversary roses are exchanged as gifts between the two people in the relationship. The wife is more likely to be the recipient than the husband, but even a manly man will enjoy receiving a bouquet now and again. Red, of course, is the color of the day; there's that passion thing again. However, don't be afraid to experiment with the colors of your anniversary bouquet. Warm colors like orange, peach, and yellow will also express your love. For that matter, why not go for a bouquet containing all those colors? It'll be breathtaking, and will cost no more than any other bouquet. Consider quantity, too; a dozen roses may be enough to signify your love, but two or three dozen, or a hundred, will scream it from the rooftops.
